Giuseppe Scapinelli was born in Modena in 1911 from a noble Italian family. In 1941 the young man graduated in architecture. Once the war was over, he decided to leave Italy for Brazil and settled in Sao Paulo. He then collaborated with a businessman Francesco Matarazzo. The latter, a collector and patron of the arts, was behind the creation, in 1946, of the Sao Paulo Art Museum and the Biennale.
In 1950, Giuseppe Scapinelli founded his own agency and promoted a modern style in which the classical and traditional principles of Italy were blended with great harmony.

The forms of his pieces, eminently dynamic, reflect a certain influence of industrial aesthetics and the Streamline current. In the Margutta Gallery that he opened in the mid-1950s, Scapinelli exhibited his own creations as well as those of other artists and designers. Intimate links unite his thoughts, drawings and pieces of rare lightness and elegance. He then created a wide variety of pieces and interiors for the residences of the Paulista high society while working with the greatest designers of his generation.

In the mid-1950s, Scapinelli opened the Margutta Gallery and exhibited his own creations as well as those of other artists. Drawing is for him a perfect transposition of his thought. The sculptural lines and curves of his works are combined with the choice of noble materials. The trajectory of Giuseppe Scapinelli forms a bridge between Brazilian Modernism and Italian Design.
