On Wednesday February 7, PIASA is organizing two auction sessions devoted to contemporary applied arts and design. Comprising 67 lots, the first part of the sale features a selection of ceramics by Gisèle Buthod-Garçon, from the 1980s to the present day, assembled by a private collector. The second part of the catalog, on sale from 5.30pm, features a fine panorama of contemporary design in 205 lots. The sale is structured around a number of ensembles of pieces by designers such as Andrea Branzi, Ettore Sottsass, Ado Chale, Pucci de Rossi and Shigeru Uchida.
- Gisèle Buthod-Garçon - From a private collection
Gisèle Buthod-Garçon's artistic career spans forty years of experimentation in the fire arts. Her work is mainly conditioned by the adoption of a specific firing method, the so-called "American raku" firing invented in the 1950s by Paul Soldner following a firing accident. Right from the start, Gisèle Buthod-Garçon had the opportunity to attend a Soldner workshop, which totally captivated and inspired her. "This technique implies that the artist becomes an actor in the firing process, as close as possible to the flames and the fusion of the material. It was this taste for the spectacle of fire that led Gisèle Buthod-Garçon to ceramics", as Stéphanie Le Follic-Hadida points out in the catalog. The private collection on sale today reveals a particular affinity for certain highly identifiable periods in the artist's career, particularly the most recent ones. This selection of more than sixty pieces, more sculptural than utilitarian, and some of them approaching a certain figurative style, also bears clear witness to an exceptional artistic career in which the density, depth and long-term commitment of the artist's work are indisputable.
