As part of the "Italian Selected Design" session organised by PIASA auction house on October, 30, 2019, nearly 30 pieces by designer Gio Ponti (1891-1979) will be offered for sale with estimates ranging from €1,500 to €45,000.
The outbreak of the First World War and the general mobilization it provoked throughout Europe interrupted the architectural studies that Gio Ponti had begun at the Milan Polytechnic. When the fighting stopped, he resumed his training and he graduated in 1921. A few months later, he founded an architectural studio with Emilio Lancia and Mino Fiocchi.
Two years later, Gio Ponti was appointed artistic director of one of Italy's leading porcelain manufacturers. It completely renews the iconographic repertoire, streamlining the production system of the pieces while maintaining their high quality of execution. His first pieces were presented at the first Biennale of decorative Art de Monza in 1923 and then in 1925 at the Exposition Internationale des decorative Art.
From the beginning of his career, Gio Ponti has been promoting Italian creation in all its forms. From a simple participant, he became a member of the steering committee of the Monza Biennales in 1927, where he defended the rapprochement between crafts and industry.

This simplicity of form is also remarkable on the surface of this other chest of drawers in rosewood, brass and formica from Madame Rossella Colombari's private collection. Between armchairs and sofas, lights and wall lights, the selection faithfully reflects the diversity of an abundant production.
Founder of the magazine Domus and emblematic actor of the Milan Triennial, Gio Ponti has been - throughout his life - an ardent defender of a renewal for Italian design in the context of the post-war period. Presented since 1950 as part of the "Italy at Work" exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, his work is now celebrated all over the world and in 2018 at the decorative arts museum in Paris.
