Dedicated to design, the session organised by PIASA on December, 18, 2019 will be an opportunity to highlight the most emblematic designers of the second half of the 20th century, including Gio Ponti.
The rain of fire and steel that fell on Europe from the outbreak of the First World War marked a halt in Gio Ponti's architectural studies. He had started them at the Milan Polytechnic. When the fighting stopped, he resumed his training before graduating in 1921. A few months later he set up his own business and opened an architectural firm with Emilio Lancia and Mino Fiocchi.
Shortly afterwards, Gio Ponti was appointed artistic director of one of Italy's leading porcelain manufacturers. He took the opportunity to completely renew the iconographic repertoire by rationalizing the production system while maintaining the technical virtuosity of their execution. His first works were presented at the Biennale des arts décoratifs de Monza in 1923 and again in 1925 at the Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs. He will also receive a reward.

From the beginning of his career, Gio Ponti has been promoting Italian creation in all its forms. From a simple participant, he became a member of the steering committee of the Monza Biennales in 1927, where he defended the rapprochement between crafts and industry.
Founder of the magazine Domus and emblematic actor of the Milan Triennial, Gio Ponti has been - throughout his life - an ardent defender of a renewal for Italian design in the context of the post-war period. Presented since 1950 as part of the "Italy at Work" exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, his work is now celebrated all over the world and in 2018 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

Made of wood, brass and leather, his armchairs combine Gio Ponti's ease of assembling materials in a harmonious way with the virtuoso management of lines that seem to seduce both the user's body and his eyes. It is estimated at between €18,000 and €25,000.
