George Nakashima: wood poet

As part of its anniversary sale "5 to 118" of September 18, 2019, PIASA offers for sale three pieces of Japanese designer George Nakashima.

 With MIT architectural diploma in his pocket, Georges Nakashima left his native America and crossed the Atlantic in 1931. For several months, he travelled all over France and experienced bohemian life, before joining Japan via Africa. North. He discovered the design and architecture of the Japanese archipelago with Antonin Raymond himself trained by Cass Gilbert and Frank Lloyd Wright. 

It is in the context of the construction of a dormitory in an ashram of Pondicherry in India that he begins to realize his first furniture. In 1940, he returned to Seattle where he taught woodworking. As a result of the entry into the war of the United States, the designer of Japanese origin is taken prisoner. He will be released in 1943 thanks to the sponsorship of his friend Antonin Raymond.
