Gedi Sibony's Spatial Collages

6 May 2021

On May 12th, PIASA will present a new session of (very) Contemporary Art by auctioning a hundred works from a Belgian private collector, including an installation by the American artist Gedi Sibony.

Gedi Sibony's work is rooted in the heritage of painting, assemblages and sculpture. His wall works are never completely two-dimensional, often simply resting against a wall or hanging precariously. Gedi Sibony's practice draws inspiration from Robert Rauschenberg's Combines and Richard Tuttle's installation sculptures. Sibony accumulates daily abandoned objects, plastic packaging materials, cardboard, carpets, wooden partitions, plaster, truck doors. His minimal works are meticulous arrangements made with a particular sensitivity for the textures, the hues of the reappropriated materials, their geometry, which are simultaneously beautiful and embarrassing. Despite the sobriety of his work, the artist handles with humor the creation of his titles of works very often imagined, here The Raffler, 2009.

Gedi Sibony lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Recent solo exhibitions include The Terrace Theater, Greene Naftali, New York (2020); The King and the Corpse, Greene Naftali, New York (2018); Lemons and Grapefruit, Gladstone Gallery, Brussels (2017); and Eröffnung, Meyer Kainer, Vienna (2017). Recent solo exhibitions include 55 Years, Douglas Hyde Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin (2014); Culturgest, Lisbon (2011); My Arms Are Tied Behind My Other Arms, Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis (2009); and In the Still Epiphany, a curatorial project at The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, St. Louis (2012).

Guggenheim Museum, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Dallas Museum of Art, Texas; Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, St. Louis; Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York; and Palm Springs Art Museum, California.
