The Bruno Gambone Collection

27 January 2023

On Wednesday, February 15, PIASA will have the honor and privilege of hosting an auction dedicated to the ceramics of Italian artist Bruno Gambone (1936-2021).

About 10 years ago, PIASA organized a sale dedicated to the work of Bruno Gambone, and it was extraordinarily well received by ceramic collectors at the time. This time around, the second edition of this sale has been organized in collaboration with the Gambone family; as a result all of the pieces here have been pulled directly from the artist's studio. The typological diversity of the creations is a testament to the particularly rich creative universe of this artist, who was an expert in stoneware.

"His very varied typological repertoire is characterized by a great formal harmony: vases, plates, bowls, sculptures, and slabs are the result of a very precise design research where the smallest details are not neglected. He often manages to transform the surfaces of his works into three-dimensional spaces by inserting an expressive device of signs that sweeps the areas of the planes with a delicate balance," says art historian Gilda Cefariello Grosso.

Son of the ceramist Guido Gambone, Bruno was introduced to this practice as a teenager while experimenting in various fields of art including painting, goldsmithing, glassmaking, and furniture design. In the 1960s, he moved to New York where he crossed paths with leading artists such as Louise Nevelson, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. He returned to Italy in 1968 and rubbed shoulders with the Milanese artistic milieu (Lucio Fontana, Paolo Scheggi, Enrico Castellani, and others). The death of his father a year later encouraged him to take over his father's Florentine workshop and devote himself fully to ceramics, which he continued to challenge through various experiments on materials and forms.
