Hantaï, Geer van Velde, Maryan, and Télémaque are all artists who once enjoyed their heyday in France. But where do they stand today? Here is an analysis on the occasion of a collection to be auctioned this September at the new headquarters of the PIASA auction house.
On September 23rd, the PIASA auction house will auction 70 works from the French post-war period. This era corresponds precisely to the moment when Paris lost its artistic hegemony. A new wind was then blowing from the United States with the birth of major movements such as the new abstraction known as "Abstract Expressionism," followed by Minimalism and then Pop Art.
After years of French dominance, the beating heart of artistic creation and the art trade clearly shifted across the Atlantic. Of course, the likes of Picasso and Giacometti were still active in Paris, but neither Montmartre, Montparnasse, nor the Plaine Monceau retained their former vitality.
