On Thursday, June 23, 2022 PIASA will hold an auction of editions: prints, illustrated books and limited editions.
Featuring 258 lots, this auction offers an insight into 20th and 21st centuries art editions. The catalogue specifically covers the interwar period with works by Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, etc., and the most contemporary art, including works by Gerhard Richter, Damien Hirst, Kaws, JR, etc. About twenty lots are from the collection of Maria Papa Rostkowska, herself an artist and collector.
This auction devoted to limited edition is a fantastic journey through the artistic creation of the last century. The great names of modern art are represented, such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Vassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Man Ray and Sonia Delaunay, as well as renowned post-war artists such as Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, Asger Jorn, Pierre Soulages, Antoni Tàpies, Vasarely, César and Sam Francis. Contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, John M. Armleder, Julian Opie, Gerhard Richter, Takashi Murakami complete this eclectic selection.
Highlights of the catalogue include a set of screenprints by Andy Warhol depicting Saint Apolline, the patron saint of dentists. The portfolio is complete with four numbered variations, which is quite rare. Damien Hirst is presented with a complete suite of 10 screenprints. Important corpus of works are also on display: some fifteen lithographs, etchings and aquatints signed by Sam Francis, a dozen pieces including a porcelain egg cup by François-Xavier Lalanne, just as many prints and ceramic pieces by Picasso, and eight lithographs by Joan Miró.
Finally, the auction is also notable for the presence of an important collection from Maria Papa Rostkowska. One of the most important resistance fighters in Warsaw during World War II, this Polish artist moved to France at the end of the 1950s, where she met the artists of the New School of Paris (Joan Miró, Sonia Delaunay, Hans Arp, Serge Poliakoff, Nina Kandinsky, Lucio Fontana, Wifredo Lam, etc.) and Gualtieri Papa di San Lazzaro, a gallery owner, writer, journalist and founder of the Revue XXe siècle, who she later married. The catalogue includes works that bear witness to her years in Paris and to her friendship with all those artists.
