Editions : estampes, livres illustrés, multiples

9 December 2022

On Tuesday, December 20, PIASA is organizing a sale titled Editions, featuring prints, illustrated books and more.

This last auction of 2022 is an anthology of 20th century creations. Here we find great names through unusual projects, such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, Sam Francis, Arman, Victor Vasarely, Jean Dubuffet, and more, alongside resolutely contemporary projects conceived by artists such as Gerhard Richter, Damien Hirst, Bruce Nauman, Takashi Murakami, Bernard Frize, and Sol Lewitt, which attest to the persistent interest in the field of creation for the "multiple" genre.

Among the hundred or so artists featured in the sale, two key figures stand out: Sonia Delaunay and Niki de Saint-Phalle, whose artistic practice has never ceased to challenge the established order and, at the same time, to be nourished by dialogue with the production of their artist spouses, Robert Delaunay and Jean Tinguely respectively.

Gerhard Richter (born 1932) Flow - 2016 Chromogenic print mounted on aluminium composite panel (Diasec procedure), the full sheet Signed and numbered "354/500" in felt pen on the publisher's label on the back Publisher Heni Editions, London 100×200cm Bibliography: Hans Richter online catalogue raisonné, no. The sale is also distinguished by several projects, sometimes out of the ordinary, by publishers who have been able to forge very close ties with the artists of their time.
We note a lithograph of Picasso in an exceptional format - 79.3 × 110.2 cm - made by the Mourlot brothers, rare editions of the historic magazine Cahiers d'art by Christian Zervos, as well as several first editions of the magazine XXe Siècle, or from the printer Crommelynck Frères. Finally, it is difficult to miss the copy "Thirty years of activity" that gallery owner and publisher Gérald Cramer created in 1971 as an account of his unique collaborations with Henri Matisse, Jacques Villon, Jean Arp, Marino Marini, and Henry Moore, to name a few.
