Design Rustic Revival curated by Marie Kalt

14 April 2022

On April 27, PIASA will hold a design auction curated by Marie Kalt and Aurore Lameyre.

Comprising 146 lots, this sale is based on a selection of vintage and contemporary objects with a very singular style that defies trends. Whether it is a ceramic and lacquered steel claustra by Roger Capron, a solid elm table by Pierre Chapo, a 1970s Brazilian dining room table or, more recently, a curiosity cabinet designed by Jean-Guillaume Mathiaut, these pieces are all based on a timeless design, which is further enhanced by particularly remarkable craftsmanship.

"With simple shapes in which the beauty of the material acts as decoration, the pieces produced by a new generation of designers reflect the current enthusiasm for the artisanal gesture. Close to the undesigned design championed by Terence Conran, they combine references to rustic style or folk arts and traditions, but are also part of a trend initiated by other designers throughout the 20th century. There are echoes of Axel Einar Hjorth's 1930s Furniture for a holiday house, or Charlotte Perriand's designs. Often modest, always functional, all these objects nevertheless bear, through the choice of a finish or a construction detail, the specific mark of those who created them. Combining contemporary creations with anonymous or signed vintage pieces, this sale weaves a link between the productions of these different eras and pays tribute to the timeless authenticity of these beautiful everyday objects."
