On Thursday October 26, PIASA is organizing a sale of French design from the Pascal Cuisinier collection.
Comprising 121 lots, the sale catalog is a highly representative sample of the design collection of gallery owner and collector Pascal Cuisinier. The selection offers an in-depth look at the French design scene that developed in the 1950s, when the country was in the throes of reconstruction. It includes creations - lighting fixtures, seats, tables, storage units... - by designers such as Robert Mathieu, Pierre Guariche, Joseph-André Motte, André Monpoix, Janine Abraham & Dirk Jan Rol... who Pascal Cuisinier has been exhibiting in his gallery for some twenty years.

"In the early 1950s, a generation of ambitious, intelligent and highly creative young people graduated from France's top design schools. They revolutionized the decorative arts, inventing what we now call design, creating the forms and techniques for furniture, seating and lighting that we still use today, and producing some of the finest interior design projects in France during the Trente Glorieuses. At the time, the press dubbed them the "young wolves", a term taken up by Patrick Favardin, a historian specializing in this period; for my part, I coined the concept of "early French designers". This generation lived through one of France's most prosperous periods, when it was a world leader in every field of science, philosophy, diplomacy, art, literature and technology. The decorative arts, design and interior architecture were not to be outdone, as France has a major history in this field, and its schools are its legacy," emphasizes Pascal Cuisinier.
Since 2006, this gallery owner and collector has been championing the furniture production of this generation of French designers who burst onto the scene in the early 1950s: Robert Mathieu, Pierre Guariche, Joseph-André Motte, André Monpoix, Janine Abraham & Dirk Jan Rol, Alain Richard, Michel Buffet, Pierre Guariche - undoubtedly the best known to the general public today - are among the designers who, barely out of school, made their mark over the course of a decade (1951-1961). Their pieces combine extraordinarily modern designs with production methods at the crossroads of craft and industrial design. They rightly correspond to the needs and living standards of the French, who at the time were looking for a new approach to home furnishing. The Salon des Arts Ménagers of this period will support this trend by showcasing the work of these young designers.
