Daum, a witness to the twenties’ way of life

8 February 2018

The renowned Daum factory, showcasing French expertise, has maintained the excellence of its artistic creativity and technical qualities for 140 years. Created in 1878 by Jean Daum in Nancy and developed by his sons Auguste and Antonin Daum, the crystal manufacturing company has constantly evolved and profoundly influenced glassware and decorative arts in the 20th century.

At the turn of the 20th century, the Daum firm relied on artists such as Jacques Grüber, Henri Bergé or Almaric Walter to bring an artistic inspiration to its production, a tradition perpetuated today. By participating in many International and Universal exhibitions – Chicago in 1893, Brussels in 1895, Paris in 1889 and 1900 -, the manufacture acquired an international reputation. Thereafter, the crystal manufacturers will persistently strive to renew themselves both from a technical and aesthetic point of view by updating their production. This is how Paul Daum, Auguste’s son, ensured the transition from the Art Nouveau style, relying on naturalistic patterns, to the geometric inspirations of Art Deco.

Daum’s forty-four pieces, created between 1922 and 1935 and presented in PIASA’s “Glass – verrerie européenne” auction demonstrate this degree of technical skill and stylistic renewal marked by the advent of Art Deco.

The multi-layered glass objects – complex work requiring highly qualified artisans –, the decorations created by including metal oxides, and the glittered glass vases with deep acid-etched decorations demonstrate the blooming of the manufacturing process. From their creation in the 1920s, the public is enthused by these works.

The abandonment of the superfluous and the stylization of the pattern harmonize perfectly with the bright colors which reflect the “joie de vivre” of the roaring twenties. The taste for purifying and rationalizing forms accompanies the quest for modernism which dominates all the artistic fields of the time. Daum’s creations echo the way of life of an era.

The dynamism of Daum’s productivity, ensured by major demands and orders, was halted by German occupation. Since its reopening in 1946 by Henri Daum, Auguste’s youngest, the company has been reinforcing its reputation and the phenomenon has been perpetuated to this day.
