Daniel Arsham: the journey into the archaeology of the future

Through the continuation of Daniel Arsham's "Future relics" presented at auction at the EDITIONS auction on December 11, PIASA projects us into the world of fictional archaeology.

Daniel Arsham was born in 1980. Very quickly, he will seek to change the codes by proposing heterogeneous works, mixing architecture, art and performance. Since 2004, he has been collaborating with the Perrotin gallery with the "Miami Nice" exhibition. He is also known for his link with Pharrell Williams by reproducing his first synthesizer that can be found in the sale with the work "Keyboard, Future relic".

Estimate : 3000 / 4000

Daniel Arsham began this "future relics" work in 2013 and completed it in 2018. He presents his works according to the codes of archaeology since the box details the discovery of the object, latitude and longitude, weight, dimensions... In addition, each batch is accompanied by a pair of gloves, an essential accessory for the archaeologist to handle the fruits of his explorations.

Arsham has made moulds in plaster and broken glass that give the impression of coming out of archaeological excavations. It represents emblematic objects from the end of the 20th century that seem to us to be already outdated, such as the Polaroidthe audio cassette or the alarm clock. These objects have a strong symbolic value because they evoke the obsolescence of our everyday technological objects, which has accelerated with the transition to the digital age.

Estimate : 2500 / 3500

Estimate : 2000 / 3000

PIASA is also auctioning a work by Arsham in association with Rimowa, which brings this famous vintage suitcase up to date. This work, entitled "Eroded Suitcase" is composed of an aluminium alloy attaché case that collects the casting of the attaché case eroded by the time "discovered" in March 3019.

Estimate : 6000 / 8000

Daniel Arsham, who is one of the most prominent contemporary artists in the United States, challenges us with the immaculate white colour of his creations, which are presumed to be archaeological discoveries but which are devoid of all dirt and dust.

Through his works, Arsham offers us a journey back in time by projecting our civilization into the distant past and introducing an almost scientific aspect into his sculptural approach.
