Charlotte Perriand : icon of modernity

5 December 2019

As part of the Selected design session on Tuesday, December 11, 2019, PIASA is pleased to offer 18 pieces by Charlotte Perriand for sale.

Born of a tailor father and a seamstress mother for haute-couture, Charlotte Perriand graduated from the Union centrale des arts décoratifs in 1925. That same year, she exhibited wall panels representing nine muses for a music salon at the International Exhibition of Decorative and Modern Industrial Arts. The following year, she presented a "lounge corner" at the Salon des artistes décorateurs de Paris in 1926, including a table with a glass and steel top.

She made her name at the age of 24 with her Bar under the roof, including pedestal tables, low stools and bar stools with cross- or circular legs and a bench, in chromed steel, anodized aluminium and glass, created for her workshop apartment in Place Saint-Sulpice, which was presented at the 1927 Autumn Salon and acclaimed by critics and displayed a cabinet in violet wood, glass and metal at the 1927 Salon des artistes décorateurs.
