His military service extracted him from the Nice Opera, where he served as an assistant decorator, and led the artist to the Tarascon barracks, under the roof of which he set up a studio. On the surface of his paintings, the unichrome abstraction gives way to a monochromatic painting in which black displays all its expressive power.
Returning from a mobilization of nearly ten months in Algeria, Bernar Venet gravitates around the nebula of New Realism and frequents the artistic scene of Nice where Cesar and Arman are the most emblematic representatives.

At the end of the 1960s, the artist multiplies his travels in New York. The MoMA acquires one of his works and the gallerist Leo Castelli opens the doors of his gallery for him. Fruitful exchanges with scientists at Columbia University allow Bernar Venet to deepen his mathematical knowledge.
