As part of the sale organized on Thursday, October 10, 2019, PIASA auction house is pleased to offer Scandinavian design collectors a selection of twelve ceramics made by the virtuosity of the Danish designer Axel Johannes Salto (1889-1961).
While burning steel was raining on the Samarian trenches and the clouds of sulfur darkened the sky of a suicidal Europe, the city of Paris never ceased projecting a light that attracts creators from around the world.
Among them, the young Axel Johannes Salto who had the good fortune to meet the painters Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). As a real revelation, this first travel will be followed by a second, in 1925, during which he had the opportunity to present a series of sandstone, commissioned by the Danish company Bing & Grøndahl, at the Danish pavilion of the international exhibition of Modern decorative and industrial arts. Axel Johannes Salto inaugurated with great pomp a successful career during which he produced more than 3,000 pieces, notably in the Carl Halier ceramics workshop in Frederiksberg.
From the early 1930s, he worked mainly with the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory. The technical virtuosity of the ceramist pushes him to experiment with ambitious glazes which gives the objects an exceptional and recognized plastic quality.
