Modern and Contemporary Art

6 October 2021

On Tuesday October 19th, PIASA is organising a Modern and Contemporary Art auction. Featuring 86 lots, this sale is largely centred on pictorial works from the second half of the 20th century.

As rich as it is diverse, the catalogue includes several works by artists of the figuration narrative (Hervé Télémaque, Bernard Rancillac...), "Affichistes" such as Jacques Villeglé, Mimmo Rotella and Raymond Hains, as well as paintings by artists of the Cobra movement (Alechinsky, Constant). Works by more contemporary artists such as Gérard Garouste and Robert Combas complete this view of painting.

This auction is rightly included in the dynamics of what can be described as the Parisian week of modern and contemporary art that the FIAC has established in the capital every autumn for almost half a century. In this context, the catalogue for this sale takes the approach of examining the various pictorial experiments that have nourished the history of art from the post-war period to the present day.

The French scene is given pride of place with numerous pieces by Figuration Narrative artists such as Hervé Télémaque, Bernard Rancillac and Gérard Fromanger; a chapter devoted to the "Affichistes" (Jacques Villeglé, Mimmo Rotella, Raymond Hains) as well as paintings by contemporary artists such as Gérard Garouste, Robert Combas, Françoise Pétrovitch and Olivier Masmonteil.

The international scene is obviously represented through a choice of often singular works such as an Indian ink and tempera on paper from 1958 by Pierre Alechinsky, an acrylic on panel by Günther Förg (1988) or, more contemporary, an oil on canvas by Mike Bouchet (2014). Finally, there are a few works by artists who have not yet familiarised the public with the pictorial genre. For example, this watercolour by Marc Quinn, this work on paper by Jaume Plensa or this industrial painting on paper by Ai Weiwei, whose diversity of techniques and subjects attests to the inexhaustible resources of painting.
