Finnish Lights & Brazilian Design

22 March 2024

On Thursday, April 4th, PIASA is organizing a 20th-century design sale centered on two distinct yet complementary themes: Finnish lights and Brazilian furniture design.

PIASA has united two design selections in one sale, each with a distinct but complementary identity in their visual approach.

The first catalogue, put together in partnership with the Finnish auction house Annmaris, includes 88 lighting fixtures (floor lamps, bedside lamps, hanging lamps, and more). Alongside an important set of creations by Paavo Tynell, there are some works by Itsu, Mauri Almari, Gunilla Jung, Tapio Wirkkala, Lisa Johansson-Pape, and many more.

Paavo Tynell (1890-1973)£
Suspension, model no. 9041, 'Snowflake'
Estimate : 80 000 / 120 000€

The second catalogue honors the big names in Brazilian design such as Oscar Niemeyer, Joaquim Tenreiro, Sergio Rodrigues, Jorge Zalszupin, and Giuseppe Scapinelli whose selection of lots focuses exclusively on furniture and a few decorative objects.

Joaquim Tenreiro (1906-1992)
Chaise longue
Estimate: 50000 / 70000 €

José Zanine Caldas (1919-2001)
Sofa de Troncos - Sculptural sofa
Estimate : 100 000 / 150 000 €

The exhibition, which will be held from Saturday, March 30th to Wednesday, April 3rd, will reveal the surprising and harmonious visual correspondence that takes place between these pieces that, at first glance, seem to be far apart: divergent origins and cultural inspirations, with very distinct shapes and craftsmanship -- not to mention the use of these pieces. In other words, a new correspondence shouldered by the artistic audacity dear to PIASA!
