Modern & Contemporary Art | The meaning of an aesthetic choice

15 November 2023

PIASA is organizing the sale of a selection of works of art from a private collection.

Comprising 46 lots, the sale testifies to a couple's confident and eclectic taste for 20th century art. The selection includes several major works that have not been seen on the market for two decades or more. Among the works offered for sale are two elegant bronzes by Rembrandt Bugatti, a monumental oil by Georges Mathieu, a 1965 "hourloupe" by Jean Dubuffet, a 1961 composition combining abstraction and calligraphy by Chinese artist Chu Teh-Chun... as well as an exceptional group of pieces by Picasso, including an Aztec Vase with Four Faces from 1957.

Lot 28 | Chu Teh-Chun
Ray of Light
Estimate: 500 000 / 700 000€

This sale of some forty works of art from a private collection is perfectly in line with PIASA's approach, which aims to offer singular and original views of artistic creation.

Lot 4 | Rembrandt Bugatti
Devouring lioness, circa 1904
Estimate: 200 000 / 300 000€

Each of the pieces was carefully selected at the time of acquisition, creating a perfectly balanced ensemble in which each element resonates with the others. The "classical" figuration of sculptures by Joseph Bernard, Alfred Boucher and Rembrand Bugatti is matched here by the luminous abstraction of Chu Teh-Chun, the more graphic hourloupe of Jean Dubuffet, and the colorful gestures of Georges Mathieu's La Bataille des Éperons d'or, an oil on canvas in an unusual format. Likewise, Picasso's ensemble of ceramics, silverware and drawings, comprising some fifteen pieces, dialogues with the delicately realistic landscapes of Gustave Loiseau and Maurice de Vlaminck... all diversities that define the identity and character of this collection.

Lot 31 | Georges Mathieu
The Battle of the Golden Spurs, Brussels, July 29, 1957
Estimate: 1 200 000 / 1 800 000€

Lot 22 | Pablo Picasso
Compotier Poisson, 1959
Estimate: 40 000 / 60 000€

Last but not least, this session is deliberately being held in Brussels, in the prestigious setting of the Patinoire Royale, to echo the history of this collection and the people who have built it up to live with it, in their own homes.
