As part of the Scandinavian design sale on Thursday, October 10, 2019, PIASA auction house present to collectors 13 pieces made by the famous Finnish designer and architect Alvar Aalto (1898-1976).
Alvar Aalto began his architectural studies at the Technical University of Helsinki in 1916. Graduated five years later, he founded in 1923 his own firm in Jyväskylä, his native town.
One year after, he meets Aino Mandelin who will become his wife and with whom he collaborates closely. Although in the first years of his career Alvar Aalto multiplies the pieces of design, it is primarily as an architect that he will be known to the general public.
In 1933, Alvar Aalto completed his first major work, the Paimio Sanatorium. He will develop the entire interior with furniture of his design. Embodying the essence of the functionalist for the Finnish and international critics, the building retains the traces of Le Corbusier's influence. His architecture offers a vision more humanistic and closer to nature. Important actor of the post-war reconstruction, the architect played a big role in the urbanization of the country.

Through examples of furniture, lighting and historical glasswork, his research restores a thought and a work that places man and his perceptions at the heart of the creative process. Among the wide variety of pieces offered for sale by PIASA, the model "Beehive A331" pendant in White lacquered metal and perforated brass or the set of twelve chairs summarizes with great fidelity the spirit of this creator Peerless.
