Alessandro Mendini :color field design

26 October 2019

As part of the sale of Wednesday, October 30, 2019 devoted to Italian design, PIASA auction house offers for sale five pieces signed by Italian designer Alessandro Mendini (1931-2019).

The trajectory of this Milanese began on the benches of the Polytechnic School of Milan where he deepened his knowledge of architecture until 1959. Leading figure of the movement "Radical design", Alessandro Mendini collaborates, since the mid-1970s, with Studio Alchimia and meet many Italian designers including Ettore Sottsass, Andrea Branzi or Michele De Lucchi.

In parallel with his creative work, he directs several architectural journals including Modo and Domus from 1979 to 1985. Awarded twice by the Prix Compasso d'Oro (in 1979 and then in 1981), Mendini's work is part of a process that is both decorative and critical.

The massive use of colour to revive everyday objects is one of the symptoms of his rupture with international modernism.
