On November 8, 2018, the PIASA auction house joined forces with designer Christian Astuguevieille for an exceptional sale in honour of his work. This event will put particular emphasis on the creation of furniture and objects, an essential dimension of Christian Astuguevieille's very rich career; pieces that appear to come from an imaginary civilization that is both functional and dreamlike. For the first time since the 1990s, old pieces, without which contemporary pieces would not have been possible, will be presented.

CHRISTIAN ASTUGUEVIEILLE, A MULTIFACETED CREATOR.
Designer, artist, artistic director, jewellery or perfume designer, Christian Astuguevieille has always refused to be categorized. After devoting himself to the creation of jewellery and artistic direction for major houses such as Rochas or Nina Ricci, he began producing furniture in small series in the 1980s, which would be exhibited in galleries all over the world. However, he has not forgotten his other activities and since the 1990s he has been collaborating with Rei Kawakubo to create the fragrances Comme des Garçons with avant-garde and offbeat fragrances.

AN IMAGINARY CULTURE
In 1989, during his first exhibition at Yves Gastou's, Christian Astuguevieille unveiled a singular world inspired by the cultures of Japan and Oceania, structured around ritual objects, tutelary divinities and totemic figures. A great collector and traveller, he draws from his memories the material that will serve him to imagine his objects rich in history and symbols, constituting a mysterious and complex culture in which everyone can project themselves and create their own landmarks.

MATTER AND SENSES
Made of hemp or cotton, painted, braided or knotted, Christian Astuguevieille's rope is omnipresent. He wraps and runs over everyday objects. Rough or smooth, it is tactile and calls for the awakening of the senses, one of the characteristic axes of reflection of this pedagogue who defends the importance of sight and touch in the relationship to the object. Colour, with its symbolic power, also plays a major role in his work, as does the recurring use of blue overseas, which reflects power and purity. At the border between several forms of artistic expression, Christian Astuguevieille's sculptural pieces intrigue, surprise and invite us to an imaginary journey to unknown destinations.
