Successful First Sales in Brussels

The first auctions organized by PIASA in Brussels are successful amongst Belgian and international collectors as the total sale result approaches 1,7 million Euros. It is altogether a commercial success and an important recognition from the Brussels art world.


PIASA presented from June 22 th to June 26 th its first design selection, as it is the house’s specialty. Decorator Pierre Yovanovitch arranged the presentation. Almost 200 iconic pieces of Scandinavian, American and Brazilian designs were shown alongside a selection of glassware coming from the Museo Venini collections (Italy).

Josef Frank’s B14 Model cabinet was estimated 40/60 000 € and was auctioned 120 457 € after a real battle between buyers present in the room and telephone bidders. It is amongst one of the most important auctions of the sale. Modern Swedish design from the 1940s to the 1960s is marked by Frank’s strong concepts: the ones of a “softened Modernism”. The latter ceaselessly mixed inspirations and centred Humans’ well being in his researches. He develops a personal interpretation of Modernism and his touch will durably print on Scandinavian aesthetics.

Brazilian design was particularly well represented through creations of architects such as Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) and his legendary Rio Model rocking-chair sold 36 768€ (estimated 15/20 000 €); Luis Barragan’s pinewood table, sold 71 238 €; or Jose Zanine Caldas’ (1919-2001) gorgeous table made with Pequi wood and glass sold 59 918 € (estimated 35/45 000 €).

PIASA always gives a special part to creators who dedicated themselves to the arts of fire. Since 2015, the Parisian auction house organized two auction sales crowned with success in collaboration with the prestigious Museo Venini of Murano. This third opus gathered a selection of 50 pieces realized by Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) and Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985). These ancient and unique pieces were kept until now in the Museo Venini. Amongst finest auctions in this section, let us mention Piatto di Tapio by Tapio Wirkkala sold at 5 440 € (estimated 1800 / 2000 €) or Meri by Tino Sarpaneva sold 5 180 € on an estimation of 1 200 / 1 500 €.

George Nakashima’s (1905-1990) furniture made excellent results as well as the Conoïd bench was sold 41 447 € (estimated 25/35 000 €) and the walnut tree coffee table was bought at 33 676 € (estimated 25 / 35 000 €).
