Nearly 1.6 million total for the American Selected Design auction sale

PIASA’s sale of American Selected Design on 16 November 2017 totalled a premium-inclusive €1.58 million. The carefully chosen lots offered buyers a fresh chance to explore the expressive wealth of American Craft, casting the spotlight on such quality transatlantic craftsmen or ‘artist cabinetmakers’ as Tom Tramel, J.B. Blunk and David Ebner.

Top price of €84,500 rewarded a unique 1968 coffee-table by Tom Tramel, who helped launch the Department of Art at California State University in the 1950s before becoming a prolific designer and exhibitor over the next three decades. Today his unclassifiable works, combining power and finesse, can be found in many of America’s leading museums and foundations (lot 54, est. €50,000-70,000). The sale’s Artist Cabinetmakers prompted keen bidding, with a David N. Ebner tall-boy claiming €39,000 (lot 59, est. €20,000-30,000) and a desk in American cypress by Richard Yoshimoto zooming to €36,400 (lot 124, est. €10,000-15,000). Leading lights of American design were powerfully represented. A score of works in walnut by George Nakashima found takers, led by his 1985 Conoid desk and chair at €59,800 (lot 43); Conoid coffee-table at €46,800 (lot 38, est. €25,000-35,000); and Greenrock side-table at €46,800 (lot 99, est. €18,000-25,000). A mid-estimate €39,000 rewarded a pair of Vladimir Kagan armchairs (lot 57), while excellent prices greeted Claude Conover ceramics (lots 48-53) – with his Naanac stool soaring to €18,200 (lot 48, est. €6,000-9,000). This PIASA sale was another dazzling new opportunity for connoisseurs to discover rare pieces of exceptional quality !
